Member Information

All patrons will be required to show proof of completion of the Daily COVID-19 Screening Survey for the current day to gain access to the facilities. Patrons who do not clear the assessment or are showing symptoms will NOT be allowed to access the facility. By entering the Recreation Center, you acknowledge that you are not aware that you have signs and/or symptoms of COVID-19. 

UCSB Undergraduate Students
Do you live on campus, work on campus, or are you currently taking an in-person class on campus?
Yes: You should already be enrolled in the PnC
Daily COVID-19 Screening Survey and are getting Covid tested weekly. You will also need a negative COVID test within the past 7 days to receive a green badge.
No: Visit the Student Health page and follow the instructions. Take and pass the Daily COVID-19 Screening Survey that is emailed to you. You will also need a negative COVID test within the past 7 days to receive a green badge.

UCSB Graduate Students
Register for the daily Qualtrics Daily COVID-19 Screening Survey (Spanish and English version available). Graduate students already enrolled in the campus COVID-19 Screening program do not have to re-enroll. Weekly COVID testing is recommended but not required.

UCSB Faculty/Staff

Face coverings (without a valve) are required at all times, including during physical activity, for all employees and patrons, due to campus and county regulations and for the protection of others. Patrons will not be allowed to gain access to the facilities (Rec Cen, Rec Cen Fields, and Robertson Gymnasium) without a face covering that covers both their nose and mouth.

Exceptions may be made when a person is rehydrating, while swimming, has a medical exemption, or showering.

Students not able to follow the above regulation must contact the Disabled Students Program (DSP) to secure accommodation. Click HERE  for more information. 
Faculty/Staff/Others not able to follow the above regulation must contact Human Resources (HR) to secure accommodation. Click HERE for more information.

Physical distancing must be practiced and will be enforced, both indoor and outdoor. This means staying at least 6 feet (2 meters) apart from others while waiting in lines, exercising, and walking through the facilities. Follow all directional and facility signage and respect single exit/entrance points.

The Rec Cen closed its doors on March 16th, 2020 at 7PM due to COVID-19. With a reopening plan in place, the University has approved the Recreation Department to reopen some of our facilities starting Monday, April 12th 2021.

All patrons (non-student) who had an active membership during the closure were given the opportunity to request a refund for a prorated amount. Therefore, patrons who requested and received a refund are not eligible for a membership credit. Patrons who did not request a refund during the Rec Cen closure will be issued Rec Cen membership credit for the number of days that you had an active membership during the time of our closure. Membership credit will be applied at the time of our scheduled opening. Patrons who no longer wish to receive membership credit can request a refund until April 26th, 2021. 

Patrons who qualify for membership credit will be notified through email stating the number of credit days you will receive and a new membership start & end date. Please note, patrons will not be able to request different start dates. If you have not received an email with details regarding your credit days or have questions regarding your membership please contact Member Services Coordinator, Diane Gutierrez, at dianegutierrez@ucsb.edu.

UCSB Faculty/Staff and patrons who had an active membership in 2020 are eligible to purchase a membership during all reopening phases by coming into the Customer Service Center. During this time we will be offering 1-month Rec Cen memberships to purchase at the regular 1-month rate. 3-month/1-year/payroll deduction memberships are not available at this time.

Patrons who did not have an active Rec Cen membership in 2020 please read updated Rec Cen membership purchasing policies below. 

  • UCSB affiliates such UCSB Alumni, UCSB Retiree, UCSB Spouse of Staff, Sponsored Member, & community will be able to purchase a Rec Cen membership at a later date, please stay tuned. 

All payroll deduction memberships that were active during our closure have been canceled and fees will not resume once we reopen.

Memberships Purchased During Phased Reopening 

Rec Cen Memberships that were purchased during our phased reopening plan will have a grace period of 1 week from purchase date to request a refund. This grace period to our normal refund policy allows us to deliver choice & flexibility to our valued Rec Cen members. Once the 1 week grace period has surpassed our normal refund policies will go into effect. Returning to Recreation

Adventure Programs are offering both virtual and in-person programming. 

Virtual Programming, such as outdoor wilderness activities, can be found on shoreline.ucsb.edu.

In-person Services: Outdoor Gear Rentals, Campus Point Rentals, Outdoor Climbing Tower, Outdoor Climbing Clinics, Adventure Pass, Paddle Sports, Surfing, & SCUBA. Stay tuned for more in-person programming.

Large Pool & Small Pool: Open all Phases *Reservation required

Diving Well: Closed  |  Spa: Closed

Large Pool and Small Pool will be open for short course swimming throughout all phases and will require reservations for lap swim. Swim sessions are 60 minutes. There are 14 lanes in the Large Pool and 9 lanes in the Small Pool. 

Check-in at the aquatics table as you enter the aquatics complex. Staff will assign you a lane and guide you through the process. Adhere to directional arrows that show traffic flow. Each lane will have a chair to place your belongings. Masks must be worn before entering the pool and after exiting the pool. Kickboards, pull buoys and fins will not be available although you may bring your own. One unheated outdoor shower is located on the deck for a quick rinse as locker rooms and indoor showers will not be available.

 

Certification classes will only be offered to internal Department of Recreation student staff in Phase 1. Classes offered include; Lifeguard review courses, Lifeguard certification courses, and CPRO for non-lifeguard student staff.

American Red Cross Classes will be offered in Phase 2. Classes offered include; Lifeguard, Lifeguard Review, Adult First Aid/CPR/AED, Babysitter Training, and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED.

Climbing Center: Closed

Outdoor Climbing Tower: Open (subject to weather conditions*) 
Daily: Noon – 6 pm

Reservations are required. Four climbers per session. No loose chalk will be allowed, liquid chalk is available for climbers. Free harness rentals will be available for users. *If it is windy, gusty, or raining the Climbing Tower will be lowered and temporarily closed.

Adventure Pass
For Adventure Pass holders, we have frozen memberships as of March 16, 2020, and will be extending memberships purchased in the 2019-2020 school year. Contact adventure@recreation.ucsb.edu with any questions.

Cleaning / Wiping Down

We need your help, to augment the cleaning procedures performed by our staff. We are asking you to assist in the care of your facility by using the provided sanitizing wipes on the exercise equipment, machines, etc., before and after use. Trash receptacles are available throughout the fitness spaces to dispose of used wipes.

Will not be open during Phase 1.

Group Fitness & Group Cycle classes will not be offered at this time.

Intramurals will be offering esports during Phase 1. Go to the Intramural Leagues page for more information. In-person programming will resume during Phases 2-4, beginning with low-contact outdoor sports (e.g. tennis) and working our way to high-contact indoor sports (e.g. indoor basketball). All locker rooms are closed until further notice. No personal items from the Rec Cen, MAC, or Rob Gym lockers will be disposed of during closure. Upon reopening of the locker facilities, all current rentals will be extended the number of days the locker was inaccessible. Contact Operations Coordinator, Chris Clontz (chrisclontz@ucsb.edu) to schedule an appointment if any personal items need to be retrieved.

Rec Cen, MAC & Rob Gym Locker Rooms & Showers: Closed  | Towel Service: Not available

Patrons will need to be prepared to arrive and exit the facility in appropriate workout gear and will not be eligible to shower following workouts. During Phase 1 there will be a single unheated outdoor shower available for patrons using the pools. 

During Phase 1 (outdoor operations) there will be no “unavoidable physical contact” activities allowed. 

The Rec Cen and Stadium Tennis courts will be available for drop-in use. Pauley Track and Storke Field are open for physically distanced exercising. Activities such as basketball, soccer, and volleyball are not available at this time.

Passport appointments will be available on a limited basis beginning the month of May, 2021. UCSB Faculty/Staff, UCSB Students, & members with an active Rec Cen membership will be eligible to make an appointment. Individual appointments only will be available at this time. 

 

Reservations are limited so be sure to cancel any reservation you cannot make. Multiple missed reservations will result in your privileges being suspended
• Your first missed reservation will result in an email warning.
• Your second offense will result in the loss of Recreation Center privileges for one week.
• Your third offense will result in the loss of Recreation Center privileges for six weeks.


The use of any robot, bot, spider, offline reader, site search/retrieval application, or other manual or automatic device or process to circumvent UCSB Recreation reservation processes is prohibited. Use of prohibited processes will result in loss of reservation privileges and access. Violations will be reported to the Office of Student Conduct or Campus Counsel.

Athletic Performance Center (APC) will conduct virtual team sessions and limited outdoor workouts during Phases 1 and 2. During Phases 3 and 4, we will transition to indoor workouts with gradually increasing capacity limits. 

Athletic Training Room will conduct virtual training available by appointment only during Phase 1. During Phases 2, 3, and 4, we will transition to appointments in the Athletic Training Room with gradually increasing capacity limits.

Sport Clubs Practice will return with a phased approach based on inherent levels of contact in the sport. Individual teams will work with the Sport Club administration on their return to play timeline following the Department of Recreation's phases.

Towel service will not be available during Phase 1 and 2 and will resume during Phase 3. For inquiries regarding towel service contact Operations Coordinator, Chris Clontz at chrisclontz@ucsb.edu.

Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP)

Massage Therapy
Massage therapy services are not available at this time. 

Nutrition Counseling

Wellness & Fitness Institute
Wellness & Fitness Institute will be closed during Phase 1.

WorkStrong Program
Eligible faculty and staff can resume their personal training sessions in-person based on personal trainer(s) availability but have the option to continue remotely. Contact the WorkStrong Coordinator at recreation-rec.workstrong@ucsb.edu for more information.

In accordance with the State, County, and UC Santa Barbara regulations the Department of Recreation has developed a four-phase progressive plan to establish a new standard of operations across the variety of services, spaces, and programs. As we move forward with the following plan we will communicate any new developments, adjustments, changes, and new recommendations from local, state, and national experts and entities as they advise our communities.

We care about your safety and have provided hand sanitizer stations throughout the facilities as well as signs posted, and a rigorous cleaning schedule to ensure the safety of all patrons.

Phase 1 (Purple Tier): Outdoor activity only. The Rec Cen Complex outdoor spaces will be converted into fitness areas to allow for physical distanced weight and cardio training. The Rec Cen pools will be open. No “unavoidable physical contact” activities allowed outdoors (basketball, martial arts, massage service, etc.). Face coverings are required at all times for all employees and patrons.

Phase 2 (Red Tier): Limited reopening of indoor Rec Cen activity spaces, programs, and services. No “unavoidable physical contact” activities allowed (basketball, martial arts, massage service, etc.). Face coverings are required at all times for all employees and patrons.

Phase 3 (Orange Tier): Moderate services and programs, expanded use of the Rec Cen & Rob Gym. Some “unavoidable physical contact” activities allowed (soccer, some dance classes, etc.). Face coverings are required at all times for all employees and patrons.

Phase 4 (Yellow Tier): Expanded services, programs, and use of the Rec Cen & Rob Gym. More unavoidable contact activities allowed (basketball). Face coverings are required at all times for all employees and patrons.
