The UCSB Fencing Club offers an opportunity for fencers of all levels to practice together. No prior fencing experience is necessary and the Club is open to any UCSB student in good academic standing. We provide the coaching, training, and the equipment necessary for success in all events: foil, epee, and saber.

The UCSB Fencing Club has been in existence since 1935 and was a varsity program up to the 1970s. We encourage our members to compete both as individuals and as a team in various tournaments throughout the year. We are a member club of the United States Fencing Association, the Intercollegiate Fencing Conference of Southern California (IFCSC), and the US Association of Collegiate Fencing Clubs. We also participate in the Northern California Intercollegiate Fencing League (NCIFL) as a guest school when our schedule allows. We have enjoyed much success in recent years and continue to grow. Please join us at any one of our practices to learn more!

New and beginning fencers might also consider joining our coach's introductory class in the Exercise Studies Department (sign up on GOLD).

History

As a result of regular recruitment and structured practices, our team boasts a strong presence in the Intercollegiate Fencing Conference of Southern California. In 2017, we made history when both our Men’s and Women’s teams won the conference title. Our Women’s team claimed the title again in 2018.

UCSB Fencing also travels to the annual Collegiate Fencing National Championships where, in 2017, our Women’s Saber squad took the national title, and our Men’s Epee and Men’s Saber squads each finished in third place. These victories led our Men’s Team to an overall second place finish. The combined UCSB Men’s and Women’s Teams finished third among all 6-weapon schools. As a result of this national success, our coach also received the US Fencing Coaches Association Coach of the Year award for 2017.

We are always working toward building a complete history of the UCSB Fencing Program. If you are an alum, then please reach out and tell us your story!
