Interested in a new sport but still need to learn the basics or can't afford expensive equipment? Gaucho REC sports classes are created for you! Our sailing lessons at the Santa Barbara Harbor are the best deal in town and a brand new fleet of Learn to Sail boats was launched in 2018. There has never been a better time to sail! Other popular sport-based classes include tennis, indoor rowing and Olympic weightlifting. Santa Barbara offers picture perfect views for playing sports, so get off the couch and join in the game by learning the basics with us!

INDOOR ROWING

The class is similar to a cycling spinning class, but on Concept2 indoor rowing machines where class participants engage in workouts set to music. Participants will learn rowing techniques and the class will be well-suited to beginners. Rowing offers a great full-body workout and participants can expect to work up a sweat in a lively and fun environment.

OLYMPIC WEIGHTLIFTING

Use our new Olympic weightlifting platforms to learn how to perform compound exercises. The class will also work on assistance exercises including deadlifts, squat variations, and high pulls.

RACQUETBALL

Intramural Racquetball is one of the most fun, single player sports that we offer at UCSB Rec Sports.  You do not have to be a pro to participate in this sport, though if you feel you're more experienced, you have the option of joining according skill-level leagues such as Intermediate and Advanced. 

SAILING

Sailors will learn the basics of rigging and sailing a boat including identifying parts of the boat, understanding points of sail, steering, tacking, gybing, performing weight placement, and controlling body movement, sail trim and sail control and basic boat handling skills. Classes will be taught in two person dinghies (capri 14.2). Participants should be able to swim and are required to wear life jackets during the course. The goal of the class is to be sail to any nearby location in up to 12 knots of breeze.

TENNIS

Beginning

Catered toward the novice player or player with very little experience, the Beginning class will cover basic grips, footwork and strokes of tennis including forehand, backhand, serves and the volley. Basic strategy will be covered as well as scoring and actual game play.

 

Intermediate

Students will polish fundamentals and skills such as grips, footwork and strokes of tennis including forehand, backhand, serves and the volley. Basic strategy will be covered as well as scoring and actual game play. Class taught by Peter Gerstenfeld.
