Lifeguard Training

This course certifies individuals as American Red Cross lifeguards. Participants will learn the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies. Participants will also receive training in First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer. This certification is accepted nationwide and is valid for two years.

Participants must be 15 years or older by the last day of the class, and must attend all classes in a session to complete the training. Training can not be split between different sessions.

Pre-requisites for this course are:

  1. Complete a swim-tread-swim sequence without stopping to rest:
    • Jump into the water and totally submerge, resurface then swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. Swim goggles are allowed.
    • Tread water for 2 minutes, maintaining a position at the surface of the water without using your arms (legs only).
    • Swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both.
  2. Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds:
    • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. Your face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.
    • Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
    • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on your back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object while keeping your face at or near the surface so you are able to get a breath. You should not swim the distance under water. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

Our instructors utilize American Red Cross assessment tools to evaluate participant skill performance. All participants must meet Red Cross objectives for skill performance throughout the class and in final skill scenarios, and pass the final written exam with a score of 80% or greater to be eligible for certification.

On successful completion of the course, participants receive one certificate for both:

  • Lifeguarding
  • CPR/AED/First Aid for the Professional Rescuer (valid for two years)

Lifeguard Recertification

This course is designed for currently certified lifeguards who need to renew their two-year certification. Through this program, individuals will work with a certified American Red Cross instructor to review and challenge the lifeguard training program. Participants will receive updated certifications in lifeguard training, and in CPR/AED/First Aid for the Professional Rescuer.

Proof of current certification, or certification expired by less than 30 days, will be required on the first day of class. Students must be able to attend all the classes in a session to update their certification.

The class will include a brief review of the skills required to successfully complete the course. As a participant, it is expected that you come prepared to perform the skills and take the written exam. Participants will be given three attempts at each skill. If they cannot pass the skills at that time, they may not be available for recertification. Participants will need to spend time reviewing course materials in the lifeguard training manual before their appointment.

Babysitter's Training

Designed primarily for youth ages 11 and older, this course will prepare students to be better babysitters. Topics include how to provide care for infants and children; how to stay safe; what to do in an emergency; how to choose age-appropriate activities; and how to recognize and handle a variety of behaviors. Students will also learn the basics of starting a babysitting business. The course consists of six interactive modules featuring video, activities, games and tools babysitters can use to build their knowledge and skills and manage their babysitting business.

This course takes about 7 hours to complete. Students who successfully complete the course will receive a printable certificate.

For students interested in receiving an additional certification in Pediatric CPR/AED and First Aid, we offer a registration bundle with both classes, which will be held over the same weekend.

Pediatric CPR/AED with First Aid

The Pediatric CPR/AED with First Aid course incorporates the latest science and teaches students to recognize and care for a variety of first aid, respiratory, and cardiac emergencies for victims about 12 years and younger.

Successful students will receive a certificate for Pediatric CPR/AED with First Aid, valid for two years.
