Our Events team hosts and staffs 120+ events a year on our athletic fields and facilities. These events include on-campus student organization and department events, external facility rentals, and Recreation special events such as the Rec Fest and the Turkey Trot. Our team's main priority is to manage risk and ensure that events run smoothly. Student staff responsibilities include set up and tear down of equipment, procuring waivers, responding to and documenting injuries, upholding department and campus policies, and providing excellent customer service. Facilities Job Summary:
All team members will be responsible for supporting the daily operations of the Department of Recreation. Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

The Operations team is responsible for managing facility access and activity spaces, maintaining facility upkeep, cleaning fitness equipment, opening and closing the building, enforcing policies, and serving as the face of the facility. Additionally, team members are the first responders to most medical incidents or emergencies that occur within our facility.
This position requires flexibility, including the ability to work weekends, holidays, and special events such as Rec Fest, Hallowheels, Open House, Turkey Trot, Dodgeball Tournament, and Rec Cendoff. Some of these events may run as late as 2:00 a.m. This is a year-round position exclusively for UC Santa Barbara students, with a starting hourly rate of $16.50 (effective 2025).

Intramural Assistants bring ice, a medical kit and a radio to each game, as well as the proper equipment for the specific sport. Responsible for: having a full understanding of the sport rules/policies, starting/ending games on time, ejecting participants, accounting for fouls, working with Operational Assistants to report scores, and maintaining order on the court/field. The Youth Programs Staff represent the Department of Recreation and all Youth Programs to Recreation staff, parents, participants, and the community. Youth Programs staff members are responsible for the general safety, development, and engagement of youth within our programs, ranging from ages 5-14 years old. These programs include, but are not limited to, UCSB Spring Day Camp, and the UCSB Summer Day Camp. It is important to understand the high responsibility of this role due to our program’s long standing history and the trust the surrounding community puts into the programs we provide for their children. We are looking for people who are energetic, enthusiastic, and love working with children.
Responsibilities Include (but are not limited to):
- Engage in and facilitate activities such as group games, sports, swimming, and arts and crafts.
- Assist with daily check-in to ensure that all children are in their assigned group and properly accounted for at all times.
- Maintain supervision of all children assigned to your group, and assist other staff members with other children as needed.
- Aid in the setup and breakdown of program activities in an effort to maintain organization and cleanliness of supplies.
- Be knowledgeable of all Youth Programs and Department policies and procedures, and enforce them as required.
- Provide First Aid and activate Emergency Protocols when necessary.
- Communicate appropriately and effectively with parents, community members, and department staff.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Maintain a current CPR / AED /First Aid for the Professional Rescuer certification. Classes will be provided by the department at a discounted fee upon employment.
- Complete all mandatory online child development and protection training courses.
- Be available for and attend all mandatory trainings and meetings.
- Preferred: Available to work during the summer for the UCSB Summer Day Camp Program

Jr Counselor Parent Information Packet
Jr Counselor Application
The Junior Counselor program provides children the opportunity to learn and develop valuable communication and leadership skills. The Junior Counselor Program is for children that are highly motivated and who can demonstrate the ability to take on the responsibilities of being a leader amongst their peers and the challenges that come with it. Junior Counselors will work under the direct supervision of the UCSB Summer Day Camp Including Camp Counselors, Head Counselors, and the Youth Programs Coordinator. At the time of enrollment, your child must either be an incoming Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, or Senior in High School for Fall of 2025.
This is a volunteer position. Service may count towards community service/volunteer requirements. Community service paperwork must be submitted to the Youth Programs Coordinator no later than August 13, 2025.
The fee for participation in this program is as follows:
- $90 for up to 2 Sessions
- $180 for up to 4 Sessions
- $270 for up to 6 Sessions
- $360 for up to 9 Sessions
Registration for this program includes a T-Shirt. In addition to the registration fee, students will be required to complete an online Bullying Prevention training prior to their first day.
Positions are available at the Summer Day Camp only. We do not allow Jr Counselors to work at the Beach 'n Surf program.
